2012 International Year Of Sustainable Energy For All

2012 has been declared as the year of ‘Sustainable Energy for All’ by the United Nations. The Eco Club of Aligarh Muslim University carrying forward its mission of creating awareness about the Environmental aspects, organized an extensive lecture programme on “Sustainable Energy for all- economic, technological and ecosystem perspective”, on 27 November, 2012. Prof. M. Anis delivered the Presidential Address outlining the need of sustainable energy. Prof. Abdul Wahab, Chairman, Department of Economics stressed on Sustainable Energy dealing about is invention and growth. He also analyzed the different kinds of Sustainable Energies from the economic angle describing that traditional sources of energy are bit costly. “Hydroelectricity is clean but not green”, was the concluding remark of his talk. The second speaker: Dr. Afifullah Khan, Department of Wildlife Sciences in his talk focused upon the eco-system perspective of Sustainable Energy. Dr. Khan vividly articulated on the human needs and the energy primarily used to satisfy such needs with Oil Energy on the apex. Dr Khan was of the view that the emissions from fossil fuels have wildly affected the biodiversity and lead to climate change. The third speaker of the day: Dr. I H Farooqui, Civil Engineering presented a comparison of energy needs during last few decades. Nuclear Energy, according to him, was not as safe and fruitful as it is perceived to be, for it generates hazardous nuclear wastes which are difficult to be safely disposed off. In his introductory remarks, Dr Fareed Ahmad Khan, President of the Club highlighted the achievements of the club and its future plans. Arif Md Yeasin Jwadder, Secretary presented the formal vote of thanks.
