With the view of enhancing awareness of biodiversity conservation, negotiating local environmental issues, and creating a 'clean and green consciousness' among the campus community through various innovative methods, some faculty members and students of Aligarh Muslim University have initiated and formed Eco- club, AMU. The Eco- club consists of AMU students and staff, has been established with the objective of heightening the environmental awareness of the campus community. In addition, this club will work to improve environmental health (defined as ecological sustainability and well being as well as the associated social impacts) on campus, local, regional and national as well as international levels and also to cooperate, collaborate and maintain correspondence with other organisation with common or similar interest. The inaugural ceremony was held on September 29, 2011 at 2:30 pm at the lecture theatre of the Department of Botany. The program began with the recitation of a few verses from the holy Quran. Prof. M. Anis, Chairman, Department of Botany delivered the presidential remark and stressed the need of such clubs in creating awareness among the campus community. Dr. Fareed Ahmad Khan, Associate Professor, Department of Botany (ecology) was elected as the first president of the club by voice vote, he also addressed the gathering on the occasion. Mr Arif Md. Yeasin Jwadder, a student of B.A., LL.B III year who initiated the idea of starting this club, was unanimously elected the Secretary of the club. He also put forward the purpose of the club, its aims and objectives before the gathering. Dr. Athar Ali Khan. Dr. Zaki Anwar Siddiqui, Dr. Shamsul Hayat, Associate Professors, Department of Botany and Mr. Ayub Shabab, teacher, senior secondary school(boys) spoke on the occasion and emphasised the need of the club. Mr. Ayub Shabab, was chosen the adviser of the club. Faridul Amin, (B.A., LL.B III year) an executive member proposed the vote of thanks on behalf of the newly formed club.
